Unfortunately, you may have no clue about your spouse’s finances, which is often the case in divorce. Therefore, you must identify what assets are in your name, your spouse’s name, or in both of your names, as well as establish and document your debts.

During the pendency of the divorce, here are some action items to consider;

• Notify banks, credit card companies, and others that you are going through a divorce.  It may be necessary to close certain accounts.
• Do not cut off utilities, cable, or stop paying ongoing bills. 
• Do not dispose of or dissipate assets.

Hiring a divorce attorney is a crucial step in pre-divorce planning. From the beginning, developing a good rapport with your attorney and feeling comfortable with how your questions are answered is important. In addition, take time to meet the support team to determine your comfort level in communicating with them.
