New Laws for 2019

Along with a new year comes new changes in the law. Many new laws for 2019 will take effect, including the following:

5 Laws Taking Effect in 2019

  1. Law enforcement is to provide a formal notice of a forfeiture-warrant hearing to the property owner within five (5) days of property seizures. Even if the owner is not present when the property is taken. Wrongfully seized property must be returned within five (5) days.
  2. In 2018, retail stores could begin selling alcoholic beverages on Sundays, but this did not include grocery stores. As of January 6, 2019, grocery stores can sell wine on Sundays from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 p.m.
  3. There are new laws that will take effect concerning opioids and pharmacies. Initial opioid prescriptions will be limited to a three-day supply for new patients. However, there will be exceptions for surgeries, cancer, hospice, sickle cell, and treatment in licensed facilities. A new state law will also establish an opioid hotline and require any business that handles, distributes, or carries opioids to hang a sign-up with the hotline’s number. Report any potential opioid abuse anonymously.
  4. Ultrasound results will be offered to the woman when it is being performed as part of the pre-abortion examination. The person performing the ultrasound must adhere to this law. The abortion report will specify if a heartbeat was detected during the ultrasound. This data will be reported to the Department of Health annually.
  5. Public and public charter schools being used as polling places for the November election will be closed on election day. This closure requires no instruction to occur at the school on that day. However, law enforcement agencies can decide whether or not the schools will close for elections outside of the November election.
